Anthony Quinn's Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits Store Email Today, Tuesday September 23rd, 2013 : Let's Talk The Fine Wines of Brasil!

leveland Park Beer, Liquor & Wine
Featuring a wide, international selection of fine wines, micro-brews and spirits
SCRAMBLING - OH WHAT FUN! So much to share with you all. This beautiful weather is contagious and puts a broad smile on my face. We have some special treats for you all here that I will mention from Michel Dumas, Ravinder Sharma, Santos Rivera and me - Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn.

I WANT TO " Shout Out " for Ravi that works our register, buys the spirits and sells you all so many winning lottery tickets, too. Ravi is retiring and going to India to spend a month, maybe more. He's here until October 15th, 2013 : so if you have not yet said your " bye byes ", this is the time.

RAVI MAY BE BACK TO WORK, he may not : that remains to be seen. It's all up to him. We love having him here and will sorely miss him, all that he has done, all that he has meant to us and the many of you that have gotten to know and love his broad grin and beaming smile. He has added so much to the daily fabric of our lives. he has solved many problems, his level-headed approach to many situations has been a real saving grace that we will remember, grin at, and miss.

HOW DO YOU MEASURE 20 years?!? That's a mini lifetime, a mini-marriage, a real chunk of both time and change. Ravi : the stories you can tell, the things that you have seen pass through this long rectangular space. So much life, so many marriages, celebrations, birthdays, reunions, partings, returns, births and deaths. You could spend another twenty years writing all these stories down, emailing them, tweeting them, blogging and pod-casting them.

THINGS CHANGE and life and business and communities, neighborhoods all go on, keep changing and morphing, the characters and the players, the observers, the landscape, city-and-neighborhood-scapes all continue to adjust. We as humans try and adjust. It's hard when you figure into all of this things like the fact that we have one week to establish a budget and pass it for our government to continue functioning.

THE THINGS THAT SUSTAIN US , nourish us, provide us with comfort and order and a certain calm and joy - like Ravi - have stayed the same. He has been here weekly for all of you, for us : we have weathered together many a storm. We are grateful for Ravi's service to Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits as well as to our fabulous Cleveland Park neighborhood.

THANK YOU RAVI,gracias, merci, prego, obregado. You are always welcome here! What will we ever do without you?!?

SO : HAVING SAID ALL this about you Ravi I will start out with your spirits and talk about them first. Santos you will follow Ravi in today's store email.

MY WIFE asked me if I knew about this? I said I did and that we sold it. She forwarded an email onto me saying that there was a push to have it become even more popular here than vodka, that it sells really well all over the world.

MY RESPONSE was that I doubted it would do as well here, and that the people selling it to us had really dropped the ball as this is the only one we have.

WHERE are all the others?

WHY have we not seen them yet? Where's all the push and advertising here to boost sales?

WHY have we never been approached to do an in-store soju tasting? Many unanswered questions. Only time will tell. Come check this out!

SADLY, NOTHING About Brasil Here In Anthony Quinn's Store Email For Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits On September 20th, 2011 : How May We Change This? Happy Tuesday, Sept. 17th, 2013 Today : There's Still Time - START NOW!!!!

Cleveland Park Wine Cleveland Park Beer, Liquor & Wine
Featuring a wide, international selection of fine wines, micro-brews and
spirits
GREAT CHANCE TO COME TOGETHER here at Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits as the
cool weather and rain of today are the perfect foil for us all to get together
here and outside the store and work together to accomplish many shared goals
and opportunities. Things seem to be heating up and I had plenty of opportunity
sitting in traffic not far from home this morning to organize many of my
thoughts. Take a gander in outline form :
1) TONIGHT : Giovanni Pasquero-Elia of PAITIN winery in Piemonte, Italy
here Tuesday, Sept. 20th, 2011 from 5-8PM with Regis of Roanoke Imports to
taste his red wines made from the Barbera and Nebbiolo grapes : that means some
Barbera D'Asti and some Barbaresco, too. No charge, join us. What great values
Giovanni's wines offer : classic and traditional and meant to be enjoyed fully
in the context of a meal with family and friends, and what values, too.
2) Weekend Tastings with Regis tasting the RANSOM gin products and Sotiris
tasting more Italian wines with maybe a surprise or two. Both here from 2-6PM.
3) A GAUCHEZCO wine dinner at Chef Geoff's on Tuesday, October 18th, 2011
for you all. I'm waiting on a menu and a price for the dinner and have just
called Mark Congdon my local rep for more info to put here for you at least to
all mark your calendars. UPDATE : Mark just returned my call and the evening
will have two Malbecs served as well as a dry white Torontes and a dry rose as
well. I will have to ask him what grapes are used to make the dry rose?
4) Spoke to owner Richard Gguyen of Nam Viet here about his friend Javier
Perez of the Team Pura Vida that will be running the 36th Annual Marine Corp
Marathon and I need more info to include here? Go to : Javier@teampuravida for
more info and I will add more as soon as I here from Richard.
5) Cleveland Park Day is on Saturday, October 1st, 2011 from 1-5PM and so
I called my local rep Vince Grande that represents both Italian producers of :
MARCHESI Di BAROLO ( in the Piemonte region of Italy ) and CANTINA Di
MONTALCINO in Tuscany ( among other selections, Too I am sure). Anyway, I have
called Vince and asked him to come up with a really SPECIAL wine-tasting for us
from 1-6PM to really make that period wonderful here in the store. Both Santos
and Ravi are also working on things to treat you all to from 1-6PM here at the
same time. Last year we had wine-owner and wine-maker Hugh Hamilton come of his
own winery in the McLaren Vale, of South Australia called HUGH HAMILTON.
6) Make plans already for our next Big-Theme Wine-Tasting : AUSTRALIA : on
Wednesday, October 12th, 2011 from 5:30-8:30PM. This will be fun : we will
include many of our favorite Aussie wineries from LONGVIEW, WEST CAPE HOWE,
VINACEOUS, GIBSON and LOOSE END, HUGH HAMILTON, LOGAN, CULLEN, D'ARENBERG, SHOO
FLY, LEEUIN, PENLEY, INNOCENT BYSTANDER and more. Still working on this of
course. Just getting started and building gradually ...
7) Working with the Cleveland Park Business association of local stores
here to help promote our neighborhood and what we may/can offer you all? I am
signing up to work on the Marketing Committee as that is something that greatly
interests me and that I am good at.
8) I just heard last night that legendary wine-importer Joe Dressner
passed away. He was fighting brain cancer and we have sold selections of his
wines for years. He had been to the store I believe three times, the last time
with owner/wine-maker Eric Texier of TEXIER French Rhone wines before heading
down to their dinner at Lavandou here at the end of our block. Joe, you will be
missed! It's really a big loss for all of us. You have made a huge difference
to the wine world with your selections of wines made in Europe and that respect
both the place, the grapes and of course the land in which the vines and grapes
grow. Someone might not like the wine(s) that you have selected but no one can
dispute the quality : traditional, classic, always popular even today as they
will still be tomorrow and the next. Thanks for all that you have added. I will
order some of your wines for October and celebrate with them and sell them in
testament and in celebration of you and your wine selections. This will be a
fun event. Look forward to more info about all of this.
9) Introducing Ralph Gillotte to the Cleveland Park staff. Ralph's first
day was yesterday and that is a BIG DEAL and we are all thrilled here to have
Ralph on board especially to help me with the wines. Ralph used to be our sales
person from Vinifera Italian wines and he really knows them well. He knows
really great Italian wines, too as Vinifera imports only sells the very best:
period. SO, we will probably have even more emphasis in the future on our
Italian wine selection. I have as yet to learn what Ralph likes along with his
Italian wines? Ralph has had experience in both retail, restaurants and local
country clubs. He's just back from a 2-month trip to Hawaii where he worked two
jobs I believe, one being in a local wine shop there? We will get more
information in the next few days. SO : come by and welcome Ralph to our store.
We think you will like him : great smile.
10) We are very sad to say " bye " to Greg Siebert that worked really hard
here and really made his mark and contribution on our store. I know a number of
our customers really liked working with him. He got another job offer but would
not tell anyone what it was. We wish him well and Greg said in leaving that he
had really enjoyed his experience here and that he wanted to stay in touch and
receive this store email and return for some of our tastings. We will include
more info as we get it. If you are reading this Greg : thanks for everything -
you will be missed. Cheers and good luck.

SO YOU SEE MY DRIVE TO WORK can be fruitful and many ideas and memories come to
mind. I had to make my list here quickly once that I arrived. I probably missed
some things but that's okay. I will add them to my growing list.

WINE From Tony & Ralph :

SPARKLING -
1) Non-Vintage Brut/Dry Aussie sparkling wine ( $13.99 ) that reminds me a
whole lot of really nice Italian prosecco. Enjoy!
2) Prosecco of CANALLINO ( $14.99 ) is pretty impressive. Dry, elegant and
so luminously bright!
3) Prosecco of VIGNADORO ( $18.99 ) has got a silky finesse and breed and
refinement that it's pretty amazing and so very agreeable. Lovely!

REDS -

1) Syrah Estate grown and bottles 2007 ( great vintage ) from California's
Santa Ynez Valley and made by ZACA MESA was great over the weekend. I enjoyed a
bottle over Sunday and Monday and I must say that it was quite spectacular,
especially on Sunday night when it was freshest. I loved it, even with the
higher 14.5% alcohol level. It was a really great foil for the cool weather
outside as I grilled on both evenings and prepared dinner for my family. It
sells for $26.99 a bottle and is worth every penny. We still have some so come
and take advantage of this before it is all gone. It's so well-balanced and
smooth : melts and molds and caresses and seduces and cajoles - an overall
grande " please ".
2) Private Reserve 2008 Merlot from Chile's Aconcagua Valley from ALMA De
Chile ( $14.99 ) is a lovely dry red that's medium-bodied and so silky and
bright and the sun shines through the color and catches in it and radiates
warmth and comfort and ultimate joy that's there for the taking and involving
no effort at all. It's perfect for this weather when you get home and want a
dry, smooth, no-edge red to sip. Cheers.

BY THE WAY : Our Chilean Big-Theme Wine-Tasting here this past Wednesday,
Sept. 14th, 2011 from 5:30-8:30PM was a huge success and we had more new faces
and customers and so much excitement and joy that it was palpable. You could
almost touch it. Many came from the Chilean Embassy to be a part of this
three-hour event where the wines showed beautifully and we sold many bottles
and cases of wine on this evening. We also raised money that we sent the next
morning to the Chilean Earthquake relief and you all helped us to do that.
Thanks. Feels good to help others where we can.
MANY OF THOSE WINES ( ALMA De CHILE, IN SITU, FALERNIA, AROMO, DOS PASOS
and VIU MANENT ) are all here from the tasting and can be purchased now if you
were not able to attend. We can tell you all about them. I tasted wines from
Chile from Wednesday through Saturday and we sold much more after the tasting.
It was a week of Chilean wines, of quality and of tremendous value, too. Thanks
Manuel Rojas for helping me to get the ball rolling and for inviting everyone
from the Chilean Embassy to be a part of this special moment.

WHITE -

1) Bordeaux blanc blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon Blanc, this 2010
CHATEAU LA MOULINIERE ( $13.99 ) has become a real favorite of you all. All you
have to do is have a couple of sips and you will understand immediately: what's
not to really like here?!?

Dry ROSE -

1) Shiraz dry rose from South Africa's Stellenbosch region and made by DE
MEYE ( $13.99 ) is very pleasing and rich and full on the palate. Again, hard
to not be drawn to it within the first three sips. Nice with or without a meal.
Beautiful apricot-salmon-strawberry colors that entice. This 2011 is as fresh
as it gets with 13.5% alcohol by volume.

THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY : Our Opportunity : Together we can all help to make
a difference. This month of September is Chile's month of independence and so by
trying 24-25 Chilean wines tomorrow ( Wed. Sept. 14th, 2011 5:30-8:30PM ) we can
also help with the Chilean earthquake relief with $5 donations ( or more, anyone
is welcome to give as much as they would like ). We have Manuel Rojas as our
special guest. His family owns DOS PASOS, ALMA and the IN SITU wines of
Aconcagua Valley. Manuel as a young man was also an actor and he starred in two
movies with Anthony Quinn. So, if you are also a film buff you can talk film
with Manuel. We have also invited everyone at the Embassy of Chile to join us
and so there will be a chance to taste with some of them as well. Manuel also
said that he has tentatively lined up a Chilean band to come and play music for
us during the event. That will be a whole lot of fun : a bit wild and mad and a
first, too for us. SO : Join us for three hours of a unique experience and SAVE
when you buy a bottle or more as from bottle #1 all the wines will be on sale
for this event.

WE'VE BEEN HAVING FUN with so many liquor tastings that Ravi Sharma has
organized for us all. We've had the NUDE vodka tasted ( On Sale $25.99 ),
BULLDOG British gin ( On Sale for $21.99 ) , and just this past Saturday the
CATOCTIN CREEK Purcerville, Virginia gin, rye and white whisky ( all $38.99 )
with owner Scott ( www.catoctincreek.com 37251-C East Richardson Lane,
Purcerville, VA. 20132 ). Scott and Chad were on hand to taste and talk about
their three products. We sold good amounts of all three. They are all quite
smooth , mellow and elegant. There is so much interest these days in liquor and
along with our weekly wine-tastings we try and do as many with liquor and
liqueurs as we can. We especially like to support local and organic as well. The
CATOCTIN CREEK products are all organic.

RAVI KEEPS FINDING " New and EXCITING " LIQUOR / LIQUEUR for us. Just the other
day he found some SMALL'S gin ( " The People Have Spoken " ) Premium Extra Fancy
( $27.99. 43% Alcohol by Volume, made from 100% neutral grain spirits, RANSOM
Spirits DSP-OR-15, Sheridan, Oregon, U.S.A. ) is : " an Oregon spirit handmade
in small pot still batches using naturally fermented and wild-grown botanicals.
Intensely aromatic from a complex infusion of juniper, orange, lemon, coriander,
cardamon, angelica, caraway, star anise and raspberry ... ". Great value, too.
Come taste this when Regis will be here on Saturday September 24th, 2011
pouring three products from RANSOM from 2-6PM. Join us, no charge.

FROM SANTOS RIVERA some of the same excitement and energy has been recently on
display with a whole number of beer tastings like the GREAT LAKES, SAM ADAMS,
FLYING DOG, just to mention those that pop immediately into my head as I type
this. All the Pumpkin beers and ales are now out and so you better get down here
to pick some up before they start to disappear again from our shelves. These are
seasonal and they only make so much each season/year so do not assume that they
will always be available in another week or two. Check on this and take care of
it now while you still can and are thinking of it. We just got the :

1) SAM ADAMS pumpkin ( $9.49 a six-pack of 12 ounce bottles ) and the

2) DOGFISH HEAD Pumpkin Ale called " Punk " ( $10.99 a 4-pack, 7% alcohol
by volume ) is " a full-bodied brown ale brewed with real pumpkin, brown sugar,
all-spice, cinnamon & nutmeg". AND :

3) " Smashed Pumpkin all with natural flavor by SHIPYARD Brewing Co. ( On
Special for $9.49 for a 1 Pt. 6 Fl. Oz bottle, 9% Alcohol by volume ) is " a
big-bodied beer with a light coppery orange color and pleasing aroma of pumpkin
and nutmeg.   ... Pale Ale, Wheat and Light Munich Malts combine with the
natural tannin in pumpkin and the delicate spiciness of Willamette and Hallertau
Hops to balance the  sweetness of the fruit. " Sounds like a winning combination
to me. Cheers.

SANTOS ALSO JUST RECEIVED some of the SPATEN " Optimator " Dopplebock ( On
Special for $7.99 a 6-pack of 12 Oz bottles, www.spatenusa.com, Munich, Germany
) and so I had to include this for you all as well.

FROM RAVI I JUST DISCOVERED in LIQUOR and in LIQUEUR :

1) Rum Cask 17-Year Old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky from BRUICHLADDICH
( $101.99 a 750ml bottle ) that is Caribbean rum cask matured and mellow and
really smooth yet quite flavorful, too. Distinct yet polished in flavors.

2) ) 03 Premium Orange Liqueur  from DeKuyper & Sons ( $21.99, 40% alcohol
by volume ) is made from Brazilian oranges. This way you can give your Margarita
a Brazilian twist. 2-parts Tequila, i part JDK & Sons 03 Premium Orange liqueur,
1 part lime juice and one-half agave nectar. Shake all ingredients with ice and
strain into a  chilled margarita glass and garnish with an orange.

3) CATOCTIN CREEK Organic Roundhouse Rye Whisky ( $38.99 ) is distilled
from 100% rye.

4) CATOCTIN CREEK Organic Mosby's Spirit Whisky ( $38.99 ) is distilled
from 100% rye ( smooth as can be ).

5) CATOCTIN CREEK Organic Watershed Gin is triple distilled from rye and
wheat ( $38.99 ) is also quite smooth with much less bite. Owner and distiller
Scott said this weekend that it's a gin that most people that say do not like
gin will enjoy because of this. I had to agree : it's very polished and silky. I
preferred myself the white Mosby's Spirit whisky because that's even smoother to
my taste.

WINES TO GET REALLY EXCITED ABOUT : Especially On Such A Beautiful Day :

REDS -

1) Montepulciano D'Abruzzo 2009 MONTEVENTO ( $8.99 ) is really showing
beautifully now. When I tasted it with our sales rep Regis recently I said we
simply have to have it. Flavorful and balanced and delicious and so inexpensive,
too.

2) Merlot 2010 Central Valley Chilean Merlot ( $9.99, 13.5% alcohol by
volume ) will be tasted here tomorrow by Manuel Rojas at our Chilean Big-Theme
Wine-Tasting tomorrow night from 5:30-8:30PM. I've liked the wine in the past
and can't wait to try it once again.

3) Pinot Noir ( Nero ) from Italy's Provincia di Pavia in the Oltrepo
Pavese hills from CA' BEA ( On Special for $11.99, 2009 ) has notes of cassis
and raspberry and to me some accents of plum and prune that darker and deepen
and stretch and enlarge the flavors on one's palate. It's a great
medium-to-light-bodied food wine that really comes alive when combined with a
meal.
4) Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve 2008 from ALMA De Chile in Chile's
Aconcagua Valley ( $14.99 ) will also be tasted by Manuel Rojas tomorrow at our
Big-Theme Wine-Tasting here. It's flavorful and bold and just what the doctor
ordered to be enjoying now with today's cool breeze and warming sunshine notes
with that delicate baby blue sky above and puffy white clouds overhead. Come and
get a bottle tonight and enjoy in anticipation of tomorrow's big event.
Medium-bodied : best with food.

5) Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 Coleccion Privada from NAVARRO CORREAS in
Argentina's Mendoza region ( $15.99 ) is where it all started years ago in the
United States. This bottle was a measure of the excellence in Argentina red
wine. It all started with Cabernet Sauvignon ; it all happened at NAVARRO
CORREAS. Come check it out - discover it for the very first time. Cheers.

6) Zinfandel 2005 from South Africa's Stellenbosch ( On Special for $24.99/
regularly $29.99 ) is one of the really special wines that we have here now in
the store. It's an old-world style wine that really has tremendous character and
flavor and will make a great pairing with a meal - many meals for that matter.
As you grill outside these days get a bottle and enjoy it will you grill and
really treat yourselves.

ROSE -

1) Ruby Vixen Soft-Dry Rose from the FOX RUN Vineyards in the Finger Lakes
of New York ( $10.99, ) : "  The refreshing, fruity flavors of this blush wine
make it a tasty partner to just about anything you have on your table...
marinated salads with goat cheese and roasted walnuts " are a favorite. Really
nice, really enjoyable with or without a meal. Enjoy!

WHITES -

1) Chardonnay 2011 from Chile's Central Valley and made by DOS PASOS (
$9.99 ) will be tasted tomorrow by Manuel Rojas. I can't wait to try it once
again. It's always been so bright and smooth and lively and easy to sip with or
without food.

2) Pinot Gris 2010 from New York's Finger Lakes in New York ( $16.99 ) is a
beauty any way that you cut it. I loved it recently at last month's Big-Theme
New York State wine-tasting here when owner John poured it for me and for all
our customers. The balance and the focus and the pleasure - immediate - of this
wine is unmistakable! It's worth buying a minimum of two bottles or more. We
will soon run out. Cheers.
