Anthony Quinn's Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits' Weekly Tuesday Store Email : Happy Mardi Gras, Happy Brazilian Carnaval, February 25th, 2014 : Cheers, Enjoy

I JUST HAD an email conversation with Sonia Denicol : I want to give her a BIG ' Shout Out ' for keeping in touch with me and helping to keep me excited and focused at promoting the really fine wines of Brasil here in the United States. When I asked her what wines she would enjoy drinking during Carnaval this is what she just responded to and left on BRALVIN Facebook Page on celebrating ' everything Brasil ' ... cheers, happy Wednesday everyone, Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn 2/26/2014 ...

Do any of you know these wineries? Please comment if you do. Obregado, tim tim a tudos ...

Sonia Denicol Let me know your opinion about this wine after you taste it.
My suggestions are always for wines of small wineries. Era dos Ventos, for example. They have new wines now, Merot 2008 and 2009, Marselan 2008, that I love, Tempranillo 2008 and Teroldego 2007, another one that I love and as we say here, a "vinhaço", a big wine!!!
In the same style there is another boutique winery called Tormentas (Storms in a free translation). Marco Danielle is the producer that makes one of the best brazilian Pinot Noir, Bourgogne style. He has now a very good Barbera and Teroldego too.
There is another winery I discovered last year, Bodega Czarnobay, from Encruzilhada do Sul, at Serra do Sudesta. They made 2 wines, Alto das Figueiras Merlot, delicious, and Pedregais, a sparkling wine made with Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. They started to work in biodynamic system two years ago.
In Santa Catarina I can name two special wineries: Domínio Vicari, very, very small. Lizete Vicari is the winemaker and she produces just 1000 bottles of a Merlot and a Riesling Itálico, an orange wine.
The other one is Santa Augusta, the first one to produce a byodinamic wine, Imortali, fantastic!
They also produces sparkling wine and a delicious white wine form Moscato Giallo.
I believe you know Cave Geisse, one of the best brazilian sparkling wine. Another one I love is Adolfo Lona, you must taste it!
There is some many others... but we'll have time to talk about them!
Cheers!!1

Thank you Sonia for keeping in touch with me, I value this greatly.   TONY

Cleveland Park Wine Cleveland Park Beer, Liquor & Wine
Featuring a wide, international selection of fine wines, micro-brews and spirits

SNOW WHITE falling from the skies, whisking here and there, carried by the
breezy-freezy winds and the effect was magical as I drove into work. I loved it,
a great way to start the day, also my week as ideas came to me about what to
write about :

HAPPY Mardi Gras and ...

Happy Carnaval of Brazil, too that starts this Friday, February 28th, 2014.

WE WILL CELEBRATE this Friday with Fatima of the LEBLON Brazilian Cachaca. That
will be nice. I also hope to have Mike Cavanagh come and pour the Brazilian
SALTON wines of Pinot Noir dry red, $17.99, and the " Intenso " Brut sparkling
dry wine, $14.99 : that would be a great addition to the LEBLON cachaca!
Stay-tuned, working on all of this. Should have everything set by the end of the
day.

UPDATE : Mike Cavanagh will pour the wines of SALTON on Friday at the store! Vais! Vais! Vais!

WE NEED to find how to buy the beer above? Let us know?  TONY

THE
STORE'S BEEN CLEARED, there's a floor to see, and space to dance and teach
you all how to dance if you do not know already as you enjoy our wine, beer,
cider, liqueur and liquor selections. What fun! And when we do our tastings,
large-and -small there will be plenty of room to get around. That's nice, too.

I WAS VERY PLEASED TO WALK into the store and see the floors all waxed, shiny
and clean : they sparkled almost, and that's coming out of the white snow and
seeing my reflection on the floor! Thanks Santos, I know you did this, and it
impressed me as always.

THEN, TO SEE the shelving for wine moved from the center of the store and pushed
over to the side of our office wall, really nice, too. This will really make
things easier to shop and less cluttered and messy. I think most of you will
like this quite a bit as there will be no more real competition for standing and
shopping space anymore. That is the idea, make things more easy to see and think
about, less buried behind other bottles, more clarity, more full disclosure!

WE WANT YOU ALL to tell us how you feel about this? Let us know when you come?
That would be greatly appreciated. We hope you like it this way because it's a
WHOLE LOTTA WORK to move things around as they were yesterday. Malkit has a real
vision and he is constantly working to implement it to make your shopping
experience more positive, easy and enjoyable.

SO : WE CAN move into Mardi Gras and Brazil's Carnaval in / with style! What a
treat!!

I AM PLANNING another ' Big Theme '  Tasting from South America that will
include both beer and spirits as well as wine. What do you all think? TOTAL
SUBMERSION in South America. That can be fun, including rum from Venezuela, beer
from Brazil, Pisco from both Peru and Chile, and so much more. We will include
the wines of Uruguay, all the wines I can find from Brazil with both the next
World Soccer Cup and the Summer Olympics to celebrate so soon. We want to be
proactive and ready and organized - well-tasted / well-informed about all of
this. Please weigh-in and give us any ideas or help that you may have? It's
always good to hear from you.

SO : HAVING SAID ALL THIS, lain the groundwork, so-to-speak, let's hear what
Santos has in beer and ale suggestions for us all :

ALE, BEER, CIDER From Santos :

1) Hefeweizen Ale from SCHAFLY Brand, Saint-Louis, U.S.A. ( On Special for
$10.99 a 6-pack of 12-ounce bottles, bottled with love , Missouri, , go to :
www.schlafly.com for more info ) : " SCHLAFLY Hefeweizen is an unfiltered wheat
beer, often served with a wedge of lemon, Made with thirty percent American
winter. " What do they do with the 70% winter left-over?!? I guess we have that
falling on us now in the form of fresh white snow? Of course, how silly of me.

2) Cerveza Beer MEXICALI Special Dark Beer ( On Special for $8.99 a 6-pack
of 12-ounce bottles, a Pilsner Superior, made by TECATE, Mexico ) : New and
Exciting! Perfect as we start to image spring and warmer weather on the way,
eventually?!?

2 By WINDOWPANE, 1 By SILENT NIGHT - from MOTHER EARTH BREWING,
Kinston, NC :

Matt Loftin tasted all three of these WINDOWPANE Series here this last
week :

1) SERIES ' Peaches ' , ale brewed with natural flavor and aged in
Chardonnay barrels ( $17.99 , a 1 Pt. 9.3 Fl. Oz bottle,  Peace, Love & Beer, go
to : www.motherearthbreing.com for more info ) : very soft and subtle and almost
delicate peach overtones. Really nice to sit back and sip and chill and reflect
and feel expansive about life. Nice to enjoy while the snow falls outside.

2) SERIES ' Blackberries ' ( $17.99  , a 1 Pt. 9.3 Fl. Oz bottle, ) : ale
brewed with natural flavors and aged in Pinot Noir barrels. Again, there was an
emphasis on the purity and the freshness, the BRIGHTNESS of the fruit flavors,
this time blackberries. Delicate and lively and so pleasing to sip all by
itself. No bite, no burn, a lovely churn, a lovely tumble, easy and being kind
to oneself here! All about pure joy and satisfaction. I liked them both very
much.

3)  Imperial Stout ' Silent Night ' ( $20.99 a 1 Pt. 9.3 Oz bottle, BA
Brewers Association ) : ale aged in oak bourbon barrels. This was fuller,
richer, thicker, denser, more immediate, more decadent with overtones of toffee
and chocolate. Pretty irresistible, really! And as Matt said repeatedly : Worth
every penny of it if not more! " I agree, it's a treat, like spending money on a
good bottle of wine. Whatever rocks your boat ...

From Malkit & Jagir :

1) American Orange Liqueur Small Batch Triple Sec from LEOPOLD BROS. (
$35.99 a 750ml bottle, 40% alcohol by volume, Denver, Colorado, go to :
www.leopoldbros.com for more info ) : what I liked most about this when we
tasted it here with Matt Loftin this past weekend here, it was not heavy, it was
not cloying, it was light, breezy and so refreshing. I liked it's subtleties.
Nice. Come get the recipe on the bottle neck and make the ' Boxcar ' ...

2) Straight RyeWhiskey made in Texas , the ' Yellow Rose ' is handcrafted
in small batches ( $38.99 a 750ml bottle, 45% alcohol by volume, Houston, Texas,
go to : www.yellowrosedistilling.com for more info ) : ' ... as it was before
Prohibition with this small batch limited production spirit , made from 95% rye
this whiskey is a true American classic perfect for fine cocktails. " NEW and
EXCITING! Come try some, tell us what you think?

3) 2GINGERS Irish Whiskey ( $20.99 a 750ml bottle, 40% alcohol by volume,
go to : www.2gingerswhiskeycompany.com for more info , product of Ireland ) : "
... an Irish spirit over which ideas travel forward. Smooth, malty, and slightly
sweet with a tingle of honey and citrus, 2GINGERS woody essence suggests caramel
and vanilla to the finish. Make a Big Ginger : fill a Collins glass with ice,
pour 2 Oz of 2GINGERS Whiskey, top up with ginger ale, wedge with both lemon&
lime.

WINES By Michel & Tony :

1) Montepulciano D'Abruzzo 2012 from MONTEVENTO ( $8.99 a 750ml bottle ,
from Italy ) : this dry medium-bodied red wine always OVER-DELIVERS, so bright,
so toasty and rich and forward, the flavors just wrap themselves around you in
such an inviting way, hard to resist! Cheers.

2) Dry Portuguese white Vinhas do LASSO Colheita Seleccionada, Branco from
Vinho Regional Lisboa, it's a flavorful and rich, filling, less polished or
refined, but PERFECT for this cold and snow, a blend of 50% Fernao Pires and 50%
Arinto, $14.99 a bottle, 13% alcohol by volume. A treat now.

3) Petit Verdot Prestige from the DOMAINE BERGON 2011 Pays D'Oc ( $15.99 a
bottle, 13% alcohol by volume ) : What a treat to find this and taste it with
Joe awhile back of LVDH Imports. This Petit Verdot is the 5th grape of the five
that are blended to make Bordeaux red wines. It's so rare to see it like this
bottled by itself! It's also the grape that may become the famous dry red grape
varietal of Virginia. It may replace the Cabernet Franc that way? We will see.
Tasty, balanced, flavorful and ever-so-reasonable in price! WOW!! A ' Must- Try!
"

4) Chablis 2012 from CLOTHILDE D'AVENNE French northern white Burgundy 100%
Chardonnay grapes ( $21.99, 12.5% alcohol by volume ) : this is drinking
beautifully! We had it open this past weekend with Jim Reeves and his wife
tasting you all on it. What a treat. BRING ON the oysters and mussels ... and
let's chow down ... nice.

5)  Canaiuolo Italian Tuscan grapes make this SONO MONTENIDOLI dry rose
wine ( $25.99, 13% alcohol by volume , from San Gimignano , go to :
www.montenidoli.com ) : so fine, so delicate, so yet firm and fleshy and
resilient, a real treat with owner Elisabete tasting it here the other day with
importer David Enright. LOVED it, we all did.

6) Sangiovese Riserva ' Petrignone ' 2010 from TRE MONTI ( $23.99, 14.5%
alcohol by volume, Romagna, Italy : go to : www.tremonti.it for more info ) : we
tasted this this past weekend with Oscar Losama and it's earthy, pithy, lots of
barnyard, rustic and really tasty, still very young! Needs a meal now : will be
FABulous in 3-5 years or more.

7) Marsannay ' Les Echezots ' 2009 - GREAT VINTAGE - from the DOMAINE
BALLORIN & F, Morey-Saint-Denis ( On Special for $23.99, regularly $30.99 a
bottle, 12.5% alcohol by volume ) : this is ONE OF THE GREAT DEALS now here at
Cleveland Park. BUY several bottles, take advantage of this amazing deal. Get

Meeting Today Wednesday, Feb. 19th, 2014 @ Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits In Washington D.C. Tasting PERRIN Cotes-Du-Rhone Red, SEGHESIO Barbera Red, Speaking Of SALTON Tannat Red, Their Visit To See The Baby Panda @ The National Zoo... & Much More ... Thanks Sal, Gracias Daniel, Obregado Maria!

Sal Furfari comes by to taste the SEGHESIO Barbera and the PERRIN Cotes-Du-Rhone, as I start with the PERRON our customers from yesterday, Daniel from Bogota, Columbi and Maria from Juiz de Fora, a 2-hour drive from Rio de Janeiro come by. I ask them : " How are you today? How was the wine? " Daniel said that they were both fine. Maria said that they had just seen the newborn baby Panda at our National Zoo up the street. All smiles. I notice her metallic silver and bronze earrings that remind me of the holidays and Christmas trees. Daniel then says about the wine from last night that I recommended : " You know, i was good but it could have been thicker. Maria said immediately : " I liked it. " That's when Daniel said again that the wine was good, he just wanted a bigger mouth-feel. I understand. I had recommended the VAVARRO CORREAS Mendoza, Argentinian Cabernet Sauvignon " Colleccion Privada". Then I went back to taste with Sal , picked up my glass of PERRON and said : " Excuse me. " I had to tell Maria I liked her earrings. I did, too. But first I asked Daniel his name, then Maria's? Then I invited them to taste the two wines of Sal. " You have enough wine Sal, you don't mind?! " " Not at all. " said Sal as they approached the table and we tasted together, Maria liked better the PERRIN, both Daniel and I preferred better the SEGHESIO. Daniel told me that he had worked in Toronto, Ontario at a liquor, beer and wins shop called LCTSO for less than a year, that both he and Maria were living there and going to school there now . Nice, I showed Maria the SALTON Tannat dry red from Barsil, $11.9. My face lit up when she told me she was from Brasil. She knew  the wine, had not tasted it. It was a great serendipitous ' moment ' for the four of us. Thanks Sal, gracias Daniel, obregado Maria. I loved it all! Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn Wednesday, Feb. 19th, 2014 here in Cleveland Park, Northwest Washington D.C., 20008, 202-363-4265 ... nice all around.   TONY

    • Anthony Quinn Sonia, so good to hear from you! It cheers me so, really it cheers me immensely! We will taste some of the SALTON Pinot Noir here, the ' Volpi ' from Campania, the 2012 Estate-Bottled, $17.99, 13.5% alcohol by volume, with our local rep Mike Cavanagh this Friday, and so I will enjoy that Sonia. I also like all your suggestions for what to drink. Which producers will you taste? Let me know any names? I love to know the names of the wineries?!? Thanks. obregado my friend, TONY 2/25/2014

Sonia just added this response yesterday that I now include here to my question what will she enjoy during carnaval?  TONY  2/26/2014 ...

Sonia Denicol Let me know your opinion about this wine after you taste it.

I am so happy for these wines you list Sonia as I do not know them and will have to work some to get to know them better. Obregado Sonia!   ...    TONY

FUNNY BUT NO ONE REALLY KNOWS our wine SUPER STARS by name like they know those
movie stars that have recently come to the openings of their movies across the
street at the Uptown Movie House : you know, like Tom Cruise, Benjamin Bratt,
Kevin Costner, Linda Carter, Mohammed Ali, Josh Hartnett, Demi Moore, Robert
Redford, Nicolas Cage, Jennifer Biehl and so many more.

WHO KNOWS THE NAMES OF Vittorio Navacchia ( TRE MONTI Romagna, Italy ), Walter
Bressia BODEGA BRESSIA, Lujan De Cuyo, Argentina ), Caroline Parent-Gros of
PARENT French burgundy ), Cantoni Matteo ( of FATTORIA FIBBIANO in Pisa,
Tuscany, Italy ), Christophe Reverdy ( of France's Loire Valley JEAN REVERDY Et
FILS ) and Thomas Haag ( of Germany's Mosel SCHLOSS LIESER, Lieser )? not many
people know these people by name and yet they may have enjoyed some of their
wines already? We have been selling them to you largely without mentioning
points and scores and simply talking about the wines themselves and who makes
them / who is behind them. The other interesting point to bring to your
attention is that recently all of these owners and wine-makers have been here
at Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits and have been tasting their current vintages
as well as some that are barrel samples and not yet bottled - just to give us a
hint at what they will be like later as we are all so anxious and curious!!
THESE PEOPLE ABOVE ARE OUR WINE super stars and just like Mick Jagger that has
dined here in Cleveland Park we draw the known and the unknown and are happy to
be a host to both. WE are always here for everyone as is our great neighborhood
of Cleveland Park N.W. Washington D.C. Here are some updates for you all on
these wineries and owners and wine-makers that I mentioned above.

Weingut SCLOSS LIESER, Mosel, Germany was just in the Wine Spectator for it's
Niederberg 2010 Riesling. I should have remembered that they were all out of
this vintage and expecting shortly the 2011 that I tasted with Thomas Haag
himself. Oh well, we do see lots of people as they pass through our store. WE
will look at getting the 2011 as it really did have a whole lot to offer,
especially a great finesse, power and focus. Stay-tuned. We are all out of the
SCHLOSS LIESER wines now but are soon receiving more. For more info go to :
www.weingut-Schloss-Lieser.De.

AZIENDA AGRICOLA TRE MONTI Italian Romagna wines of owner Vittorio Navacchia
that came here ( February 22nd, 2012 ) a couple of years ago with his wife came
alone this time. I got him to sign our bottles of the " Campo Di Mezzo "
Sangiovese Superiore 2009 ( $17.99 ) that we have had our local Voila Imports
rep and owner Oscar taste with our customers. Classic, focused, firm and best
when served with food. It is medium-bodied and got so much character. For more
info go to : www.tremonti.it.

DOMAINE PARENT, proprietaire-owner a/ in Pommard, France. Family member
Caroline Parent visited us here on February 17th, 2012 with her colleague
Corinne Robert-Berthune and Ean and I tasted through some current wines
available to us. I got her to sign our bottles of the POMMARD Premier Cru " Les
Epinots " ( $102.99 ) 2007. We still have a bottle left for sale for some great
splurge event. Come and get it while I still have it. We tasted it with our
local rep Neal of Five Grapes Imports and liked it so much that we bought it
immediately for the store - even though it is quite expensive. We know and love
it for it's amazing elegance, finesse, refinement and yet still unmistakeable
power and breed : yes, breed. It's a wonderful class-act. Lovely color and so
much to say through it's Pinot Noir medium. For more info go to :
www.carolineparent-et-associes.fr.

DOMAINE De La MORDOREE of Tavel, Chateauneuf-Du-Pape, Condrieu, Lirac and
Cotes-Du-Rhone, France : Owners Fabrice and Anne-Marie ( Fabrice's brother has
not been here yet unfortunately - but maybe soon? ) visited us here in
Washington D.C. for the very first time and what a delightful visit this was.
They are both charming as can be ( I bonded immediately with Anne-Marie's
joie-de-vivre which overflowed as we spoke in French about life, wine, art and
food )  and Fabrice is so focused and knowlegable on what he and his brother
are doing together. It was great to taste through with him the two 2008 dry
reds he had : the Lirac which Ean and I both absolutely LOVED, and the 2008
Chateauneuf-Du-Pape which was bigger, heartier, more complex and multi-layered
and needing even more of a flavorful meal to balance all it's power and flesh
and finesse. It will sell for around $80 a bottle and will be here the first
week of March. I got both Fabrice and Anne-Marie to sign our bottles of the
Tavel dry rose 2010 ( $26.99 - only three bottles left now! ). Merci infinement
Fabrice et Anne-Marie. Anne-Marie wrote : " Merci de votre bonne humeur, joie.
" and Fabrice wrote : " Bravo Anthony, la vie merite d'etre recue avec des yeux
d'enfant ... enjoy life, enjoy wine! ". For more info go to :
www.domaine-mordoree.com. Bon voyage aujourd'hui par avion vous deux ...

CHATEAU GAUDRELLE Vouvray, Loire valley, France : we had owner Alexandre
Monmousseau come again to taste his Vouvray wines with us that are arriving
soon. We sold the bottles that Alexandre sold while he was here and we will
have them back soon enough. Zack loves them and will be happy about that as he
often buys them. It was great to taste Alexandre's " new " sparkling Loire
valley Vouvray yesterday at the Mondo Vino wine-tasting. I loved it so much I
wrote a poem about it in part earlier today that I will publish at :
chatpoetry.blogspot.com tonight. It's lovely and we will buy some of that
really soon as well. Merci Alexandre. You are indeed one of the most faithful
propretaires-vignerons here at Cleveland Park as I believe we discussed on your
visit of the 23rd of February that you have been coming to our store since
2000! Wow, now that's something in today's changing and volatile and
unpredicatable world. Merci encore. As you wrote : " A Vigneau Vouvray brut
glass-a-day makes you more healthy! " For more info go to :
www.chateaugaudrelle.com.

JEAN-REVERDY Et FILS, Proprietaire-Viticulteur a Chaudoux, Verdigny, SANCERRE,
Loire Valley, France : owner Christophe was just here in the store an hour or
so ago as well as the Mondo Vino tasting yesterday. Then I tasted the dry white
Sancerre yesterday as Anne-Marie and I were in search of the perfect wine to
accompany the shrimp at Mondo Vino. We drank it before we got to the oysters
but it would have been a real delight! Today I tried his rose and really
loved the delicate flavors of this elegant and rich and floral and
totally-balanced Pinot Noir soft-dry rose. I asked Christophe yesterday if he
thought that the dry rose 2011 would have complemented the oysters and he said
" non ". I bet that the rose would have been amazing with all the shrimp at
Mondo Vino! I should have tried some but was too focused on getting some wines
for the United States for Anne-Marie to try instead of the wines that she
already knew and loved from France and Europe. We have Christophe's cousin's
half bottles of 2010 Sancerre ( BERNARD REVERDY Et Fils ) here On Special for
$10.99 ( BUY TWO and we give you an extra 10% OFF and so the two bottles cost
you less than $20 ). For more info on Christophe's wines go to :
www.jreverdy@wanadoo.fr.

MONTEAGRELO, Bressia : owner Walter R. Bressia and family member Matias came to
the store and really impressed Ean and me on February 23rd, 2012 with his
excellent 2009 Cabernet Franc ( the first vintage, going to sell on our shelves
for $28.99 a bottle  ). I liked it and it will be fun and unique and great with
a meal as in my opinion it is still quite young. Buy some when we get it and
put it away for another 3-5 years. I liked the Malbec better because in my
opinion once again it was drinking better. Yesterday at Mondo Vino I sampled
also the oak ( Walter says his Chablis-style ) Chardonnay as well as the
Cabernet Sauvignon and liked both. We will definitely buy the Cabernet Franc
and see for the rest in March. For many years Walter was the chief oenologist
at NIETO & SENETINER that you may already know about? Gracias Walter e Matias,
hasta luego. And have a safe trip back today to Argentina after a two-week
adventure here! For more info go to : www.bressiabodega.com.

2) PEAK Organic Brewing Company IPA ( India Pale Ale )  On Special for
$9.99 a 6-pack of 12 oz. bottles. We just tasted them here this past Saturday
and I must say that I have never been more impressed as I was this time. Tim
used to sell them to us but has returned to Maine where they are made I
believe? Anyway our current rep had three different flavors available for
tasting and I loved all three! Now that's a first for me. Being a wine guy I do
not usually respond this well to the beers I taste and this time they were all
really marvelous! I recommend you come and try all three. From Portland, Maine
and with 7.1% alcohol by volume. Cheers.

3) GRIESKIRCHNER Weisse Austrian Premium Beer ( On Special for $2.99 a 1

delight all by itself. It's from Brauerei Grieskirchen. For more info go to :

I KNOW THAT I HAVE FORGOTTEN MANY THINGS like talk of the Oscars and " The
Artist " a silent movie in black-and-white, the red carpet. Oh well : so many
things to remember. I will say that we have our very own red carpet across the
street from us at the Uptown Movie House ( I have put on our Facebook page at :
Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits ) pictures of some of the many stars that have
come their for their premiers and openings. Don't forget to always support the
Uptown : we want  it always to be successful and there for us as it is a great
fixture of our neighborhood and is going through difficult times. We have
discussed this at our business meetings and I know it was talked about a lot at
the library recently.
