Cleveland Park Wine Cleveland Park Beer, Liquor & Wine
Featuring a wide, international selection of fine wines, micro-brews and spirits

We'RE GETTING READY FOR SUMMER / let's do it together, make the most of it! we'd
love to be a part of it with you! More time to simply " be ".

I am taking to heart the words of the singer/producer named usher on the popular
singing show last night called " The Voice ". He basically said of the remaining
contestants that they had already proved themselves and that he wanted them
including Michele his last-remaining team member " to Be ", and to enjoy the
moment, that they would probably revisit it many times later together.

That's some good advice and I do believe that she took it to heart, too as she
performed fabulously last night along with the other three contestants. You have
all worked hard and proven yourselves, too I am sure and can now hopefully take
a moment just " to be " and to enjoy the fruits of your labors?! One would hope
so, I would hope so, I see you come to the store having put in the many hours,
having traveled much, having met the crunch of a deadline, having worked through
the office politics and all the rest.

HOPE EVERYONE ENJOYED FATHER'S DAY! Mine was very special. We have some very
special things here for you all to enjoy now. You will have to come by and check
them out. I will mention some of them here as it has been a period of mad
activity here for us all as we have received some of the shipments of ale, beer,
ciders, liquor and wines that we have been waiting patiently for. NOW we can
finally talk about them with you and not bite our tongues with the excitement
over them. That's good : it's all good. It's good / it's actually grand for us "

1) " Perle " LABASTIDE 2012, $10.99, dry white from France's southwest

this summer now starting officially this Friday, June 21st, and the humidity,
too!
YEARS AGO back in the 1980's I drove myself to Gaillac to taste this "

Otra, C.B. , www.tradewindsSpecialty.com ) : Estebe, the owner of Tradewinds
Specialty was just here tasting this himself with our customers that loved it.
Very rare, only two producers of the rose, and Estebe got very little. We have
some bottles here now and may be able to get more? We will ask Estebe. Come and
get this " rare and wonderful " experience under your belts. AMAZING, so
pleasing.

very flavorful with a smack and a splash of intense flavors that need some food
to flesh out their flavors.

6) Aglianico from ARCOS, this 2010 from Sicily, $10.99, 13.5% alcohol by
volume ) : again, really tasty and a very fine food wine and a fine, FINE VALUE,
too! What a treat! So many fine wines at such great values.

7) Chianti DOCG 2010 from the TENUTA La CIPRESSAIA , $14.99 that we tasted

flavors and energize them ... and DELIGHT your palate with all it's history,
character, and experiences and overheard conversations/ actions in the
vineyards! Yes!

9) Pinot Noir 2010 from New Zealand's Marlborough region, this FORREST Kiwi

Tasting CACHACA Sao Paulo Brazilian Alambique Cachaca Today, Saturday, June 21st, 2014 With Owners Pierre Fernandes & His Family @ Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits From 4-7PM : Join Us, Never Any Charge!

SATURDAY, JUNE 21, 2014

Tasting CACHACA Sao Paulo Brazilian Alambique Cachaca Today, Saturday, June 21st, 2014 With Owners Pierre Fernandes & His Family @ Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits From 4-7PM : Join Us, Never Any Charge!

Cleveland Park Wine & Spirits Obregado Zuly, Esther e Anni, we cannot wait to meet Pierre and Marcos later today! This will be a great event indeed as I do not think many people know how Brazilian Cachaca is made, and as you all use the best method, the alambique method that I believe is French in origin ( ? ) , and only charge $15.99 for a liter of it - wow, that's amazing! Really amazing! I am impressed. I cannot wait to learn more myself as I really do love selling and representing the many products of Brazil that still need lots of help here to become better-known in this country. ... I very much enjoyed talking with Pierre and learning what he had to say. I love that you all had a heart-to-heart discussion about the Soccer World Cup and whether to go there as a family or not or stay here in the United States and work hard to promote your CACHASA SP. I still cannot find your US Facebook page for it so please help me there as I have left my comments on the Brazilian page of Pierre's uncle that Pierre tells me will please him. Tell your uncle that I would LOVE for him to respond to us, LIKE us on Facebook and leave a comment in Portuguese for all to read and enjoy. ... I also appreciated very much Pierre's honesty and frankness in speaking about promoting Brazilian cachaca here in the United States, saying after I told him we do a lot with LEBLON cachaca, the Cedilla Acai liqueur and the ' aged ' cachaca - also using the alambique technique of production that he feels that you all must work together as a team and not against the other to better promote cachaca here in the United States, and that he - Pierre feels that LEBLON helps you all here as they are already a large presence here. Team -work, bravo, that's what it takes, working together just as we will today , Saturday, June 21st, 2014 from 4-7PM to promote your CACHACA Sao Paulo. Tell Pierre to send Wayne Currier a message for me that it would be great for him to stop by the store today for a visit during the tasting, that I would greatly appreciate that! Cheers ... ola, bom dia, vais, vais, vais vais , VAIS Brasil e CACHACA Sao Paulo! Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn 6/21.2014

Sonia Denicol Likes My Facebook Posting On The Wooden Box 6-Bottle Wine Case Cover Of The MIOLO Wine Group Lote 43 Safra 2004 SR Brasil Dry Red I Sold @ Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits Several Years Ago!

From one of Brasil's really fine wine-growing/making regions : the Vale Dos Vinhedos in the Serra Gaucha region inland from Porto Allegre and just below the fine wine town of Bento Goncalves that I visited in late June 2012 and had a ten-day trip of a lifetime, visiting MIOLO with some of the other fine wineries like : BOSCATO, Vinicola ZATTERA, X DECIMA, DOM CANDIDO, DON GUERINO, CAVALIERRI , CASA VALDUGA, DOMNO and PIAGENTINI, too ... and tried some of the other wineries' wines like SALTON, DUNAMIS, and soke of LIDIO-CARRARO, too ...

  • Sonia Denicol likes this.
  • Anthony Quinn It'sfra 2004 ) pretty special and amazing isn't it Sonia? Just think, it survives to tell a wonderful story Sonia as I believe I must have sold at least four or more cases of it and that means that many people here in Washington D.C. had a chance to enjoy a really fine dry red and flavorful wine from Brasil. I like knowing that I sold many of those bottles. It makes me happy to know that I can give back in really small bits to a country that nourished and excited and educated and developed me in my early formative years : Brasil gave me so much then, and now I have been able to share such wines as this Lote 43 MIOLO 2004 with many customers and turn them onto the special wines to be found in Brasil, one bottle at a time, one person at a time, I'm a believer like you are Sonia and together we are opening the eyes of the world to Brasil's fine wines, merci - obregado - gracias - thank you - grazie Sonia ... Anthony Quinn's Cleveland Park Wines & Spiirits' Weekly Tuesday Store Email, July 17th, 2012 : On The MIOLO FAMILY Wines Like Their Merlot, On Azienda Agricola Veneto, Italy LA GIORETTA Valpolicella Like Their Recioto Classico Della Valpolicella2005, 14% Alc. By Volume,

...

Cleveland Park Wine Cleveland Park Beer, Liquor & Wine
Featuring a wide, international selection of fine wines, micro-brews and
spirit

LIFE IN THE HOT Fast lane in Cleveland Park N.W. Washington D.C.

Just look outside or stroll up and down Cleveland Park and soak in the sun
as it pelts down and strikes us square between the eyes and try and see the
balance of things clearly so that you may maximize the pleasure of as many
moments as possible. We are here to help you do this.

The heat can be disorienting : so can the brightness of these sunny,
baby-blue skied days as we plod along and try not to shrivel like the grapes
left outside to do so in the Valpolicella region of Italy that results in the
Amarone dry red wines and some of the very best wines made anywhere in the
world!

STORIES, TIPS & RECOMMENDATIONS to best survive this intense heat, haze,
humidity and pounding sunshine :

This intense heat that we are experiencing here now reminds me of walking
the hillside vineyards years ago Azienda Agricola LA GIARETTA with the owner and
our small group of five men on a wine-adventure to visit these sites where some
of the greatest wine in the world is being made. We have some of the
lesser-known, lesser-spoken-of Recioto della Valpolicella Classico 2005 ( $39.99
) LA GIARETTA in stock. It is even denser, even thicker and lusher and darker in
hues and riper than the Amarone that everyone knows and loves. It comes in a
500ml bottle, 14% alcohol by volume,  for this very reason : you drink it more
slowly, you let it lavish it's concentrated sweet raisin and spice and
toasty-roasted flavors that come from the mostly Corvina grapes ( some Molinara,
Negrara and others, too ).

I AM RELEARNING PORTUGUESE. I spent my early years of 2-8 in Brasil and we
are now selling so many Portuguese wines. More than ever before : we have three
shelves devoted to Portuguese wines in the store and not just to the Vinho
Verdes either that we stock up front and sell for less than $10 a bottle. We
just got back the more flavorful, thicker-richer-denser, fruitier version of a
Vinho Verde - the  Colheita 2011 ENCOSTAS DO LIMA Branco Meio Seco ( $9.99, 10%
alcohol ) also has a lovely slight sparkle and it will taste great inside or
outside and not go directly to your head. Enjoy it!

SPEAKING OF PORTUGUESE and Portugal and Brasil we even have the MIOLO FAMILY VINEYARD wines
of Brasil and I have heard through the grapevine that the 2008 MIOLO Family
Vineyards  100% hand-selected Merlot, 13% alcohol by volume, is a very fine
vintage and made in the southern Vale Dos Vinhedos region. I was given a sample
bottle by our local rep and I can attest myself to liking very much this dry,
firm, fruit-forward Saint-Emilion style of Merlot that we sell here for $16.99 a
bottle. You should check it out sometime : it's really a wonderful surprise and
a delight.

I LIKE TO DRAW and as a result I like to connect the lines, especially
between the Eastern and the Western hemispheres. The lines, too are so often
blurred today as many of our customers do not know that many of the grapes came
from the Eastern Hemishere and were brought here by immigrants from Italy,
Portugal, Spain, Germany, France and so on. I have learned by looking at the
MIOLO web page , for example that many of the people that settled in the Vale
Dos Vinhedos were from both Veneto and Trento, Italy.

IT ALL CONNECTS SOMEWHERE and this seemingly large world of ours is
connected in so many wonderful ways and so I can start speaking about Italy and
Portugal and naturally get to Brasil and to Uruguay that we have supported in a
big way for many years now. I am sorry that Abel Sauza our Uruguayian connection
has moved to Florida. We do have, however a really fine dry red Tannat that is a
grape that originally comes from France's Madiran southwest  not that far from
the French-Spanish border.

WE HAVE A REALLY EXCELLENT 2007 dry Tannat Cerro Chapeu " Amat " Tradicion
Carrau ( $29.99, 13.5% alcohol by volume,  desde 1752 ; I got to meet the owner
recently at a trade wine-tasting of the Downey imports ) that is pretty amazing
and well-worth the money if you want something special. You can start with the
MIOLO Family Vineyards 2008 Merlot ( $16.99 ) as it is fleshier, rounder,
brighter and more fruit-driven and then pass to the " Amat " BODEGAS CARRAU
Tannat 2007 that is both earthier, more spicy and with more developed flavors
with more oak, too. I ask the question, too whether this Tannat is made from
100% Tannat grapes or is the law there for only 75-85% of the grapes necessary
when listed on the bottle? So much to learn, so much to know, so better get
cracking!

THESE ARE TWO WINES made not that far from one another and yet they are so
stylistically different and yet for my palate both are really quite excellent
and memorable examples of the grape variety and where they come from and I would
be delighted to drink either or both along with the bottle of the Recioto della
Valpolicella Azienda Agricola LA GIARETTA 2005 ( $39.99, 14% alcohol by volume,
500ml bottle ) to finish off the meal. I would have a bottle of the ENCOSTAS DO
LIMA Vinho Verde Colheita 2011almost as a palate-cleanser/refresher at this same
meal to give a break between the wines and the courses and to thus also add
accent and the proper attention to each and every wine here as well as the
accompanying foods.

FUNNY, and something that caught my attention immediately, the one and only
time that I saw the epically long and interesting-fascinating wine movie called
" Mondo Vino " it both started and ended in Brasil. I will have to watch it
again as I do not remember if any mention was made of any specific wineries
there or of any specific wine region. I have to assume that they were filming in
the Vale Dos Vinhedos? That makes sense from what little I know. It also makes
me really curious as I wonder if one of the people involved in the filming was
from Brasil or not? It all deserves more attention and I will be renting a copy
of the movie to watch again.

ANOTHER THING THAT I NOTICE as I connect all the dots is that all these
wines are 14% alcohol and less and I like that as especially with all this extra
heat and humidity and beating-down sunshine the lower alcohols are so much
easier to both enjoy and to absorb. You not only enjoy them better while you are
drinking them with your meal but you also probably feel a whole lot better later
as a result of this , too as there is less alcohol ( and in better balance with
the other components of the wine ) so as not to got to your head so quickly and
leave you with a pulsing headache as well. All good if you ask me.

STAY-TUNED FOR MUCH MORE INFORMATION and many more choices on these wines
as here in the United States and here in Washington D.C. very few people know
that they even make wine in either Brasil or Uruguay.

IT'S SO HOT and the haze and the humidity is holding us all down as we walk
along this stretch of Connecticut Avenue N.W. here in Washington D.C. People
walk a little more quickly as if trying to escape the pounding and that is
completely understandable.

I JUST HAD TWO YOUNG LADIES come to the store and look into our
refrigerator with cold sparkling and still wines. When I asked them if they
needed any help the one asked me if we had any really deals on cheap white
wines? I responded that we had deals on some " inexpensive " white wines and
immediately showed them the bottle of ANJOS De Portugal Vinho Verde ( $8.99,
9.5% alcohol by volume, with a slight sparkle for refreshment ) is made from the
indigenous grapes of 40% Arinto and 30% Trajadura and 30% Loureiro.

I TOLD THEM IT WAS THE BEST THING to drink now with all this heat and
humidity and I told them that was so because of the lower alcohol and the slight
sparkle. They objected immediately to the lower alcohol and I said that they
would have to trust me and report back to me if there were any problems on there
day-off and as I would be here all day. I told them my name as well. So far they
have not been here and so I hope that all is going smoothly and as planned.
Vamos a ver ...

BUT HEY, BEER & LIQUOR IS REFRESHING, TOO In ALL THIS HEAT, HAZE, HUMIDITY :

BEER From SANTOS -

1) IPA from FLORIDA BEER , Indian Pale Ale " Swamp Ape " ( $9.99 a 4-pack
of 12 Ounce bottles, 10% alcohol by volume, Melbourne, Florida,
www.floridabeer.com ) : " Firsthand accounts describe an intense beast with a
potent aroma and bite. ... Or proof that brewing with five distinct varieties of
hops creates an unbelievable, relentlessly hopped India Pale Ale? ... ".

2) Beer called : Lobster Lovers Beer with quite the sensual/funky label (
$10.99 a 6-pack of 11.2 Fl. Oz bottles, 9.5% alcohol by volume, Aiko Importers
Inc, Mount Pleasant SC, www.aikoimporters.com, from Rinkuskia, Birzai, Lithuania
) : " Has life ever snapped at you? Grab it by the claws! ". I rarely ever,
hardly never would I say this  BUT I might buy this six-pack just from the art
on the label. How does the label and the taste relate? Is there a correlation
between the two : imagined or real? The power of suggestion is intriguing and I
might just have to buy this from the label. I do have a really good sense,
however, that this will be a great summer/hot weather beer to help get through,
past and away from the heat and the haze and the humidity that dogged me through
the day. Worth checking out. Come by this Lithuanian beer and enjoy the taste
and telling stories about what the label might mean or suggest? Cheers.

3) Wheat beer, unfiltered, since 1989 from the BOULEVARD BREWING CO. (
$9.99 a 6-pack of 12 Oz. bottles, Kansas City, Missouri bottle-conditioned ) : "
Boulevard Unfiltered Wheat Beer is a lively, refreshing ale with a distinctive
cloudy appearance. Bottle conditioning gives it an extraordinary depth of flavor
and makes for a beer that tastes fresher, better , longer. If you wish, gently
swirl the last inch or so before pouring to enhance your experience of this
traditional beer ".

WINES From MICHEL Et/E Tony :

WHITE :

1) The FURST Gewurztraminer 2010 ( $19.99 , 12.5% alcohol by volume) from
Kientzheim , Kaysersburg ( Haut Rhin ), Alsace, France is round and full and
generous and smooth, bright and rounded and has a wonderful and refreshing
mouth-feel and is a delight to sip with or without food. It showed beautifully
this weekend when Chris Bartha tasted it with our customers for Bastille Day!
Highly recommended.

ROSE : Dry -

1) " La Clape " Classique 2011 dry rose blend of  80% Mourvedre,  10% Syrah
and  10% Grenache, famille E. Fabre ) from the CHATEAU D'ANGLES is drinking like
another velvety, bright, fresh, rounded, generous yet toned dream that on the
very-first-taste is wonderful and pleasing and easing to one's palate! Again,
tasted by Chris on this past Bastille Day and highly recommended. Only 13.5%
alcohol by volume, info@chateauangles.com.

REDS - Dry :

1) Vinho Regional Alentejano from Portugal, this " LOIOS " from J. PORTUGAL
RAMOS ( $9.99, 13.5% alcohol by volume ) is named for the Loios monks that
dominated this region. Fresh and bright and forward and a great wine to chill
slightly and to enjoy even with all this pounding hear, haze, glaze, humidity
and heavy sunshine. Great for a picnic, too with the easy-to-open Stelvan
closure.

AND WHEN ALL IS SAID & DONE :

2) Pinot Noir " Terrazze " Italian Pinot Nero TENUTA MAZZOLINO  from the
Provincia Di Pavia ( $16.99, 2011, 12.5% alcohol by volume - low alcohol once
again, easier on our systems ) is an absolute pleasure and delight to drink with
or without a meal as we return to from where we started this email : Italy! You
can enjoy this Pinot Nero/Noir even in this humidity and heat. Chill it thirty
minutes and enjoy it even sitting outside here on Connecticut Avenue N.W. in
this really hot summer weather. It is worth this $17 a bottle and more. The
Frenchman that makes it in northwestern Italy really knows what he is doing.
Cheers, sante, salute!!

The Story Behind Our Harry & Nancy Quinn Gift Of One-Of-Four-Original Maps Given To Them By The Brazilian State Department As An " Obregado " Gift Back In 1962-1962 : Carta Do Mundo Projecao Azimutal Equidistante Centro Brasilia , D.F. Escala 65 000 000 , No. 10 001 , Preco Crg 80, 00 : What Does All This Mean?!?

The Story Behind Our Old Hanging Map From Brasilia Back ( In 1962-1963 ? ) That Says : Carta Do Mundo Projecao Azimutal Equidistante Centro Brasilia, D.F. Escala 60 000 000 , No. 10 001 , Preco Crg 80,00 : What Does All This mean?!?

I'll tell you what it all means, it's an old gift given to my father Harry Alan Quinn ( and indirectly my mother Nancy Proctor Quinn ) years ago by the Brazilian State Department of the capitol that had just formed there in the center of Brazil way out in the middle then of nowhere that was called Brasilia! Wow, a gift to our father and to our mother. What an honor, what a treat, what a privilege, and I did not know any of this until a month or so ago when my mother and brother Eric gave me this map, saying that I was the one to have it.

I grew up with this map. It was always part of our household and I looked at it and loved it in my own growing-up-with-it-always-being-there sort of way. I guess I took it for granted. Sorry to say that. But I was innocent. I never knew, I never heard the story. Neither my father or my mother told me, or if they did it went in one ear and out my other, really bad , so embarrassing, I know all of this. Oh well, I am here to now rectify all of this on the eve of the next Soccer World Cup that is about to start in Brasil in a couple of day, Thursday, June 12ht, 2014. Just in time, the nick of time, not a minute to lose. I know, I'm dramatic, so shoot me, with blanks of course.

My mother told me the story in her apartment recently with my brother Eric there with us. Sorry to say our other brother Larry was not with us. he would have liked this story, too. he would have been proud, he would have taken a lot of pleasure in this I am sure just as I did. I think that our brother Eric had already heard the story a number of times so I think that he was not as shocked or as surprised as I was. The news of this gift to them from the ' new ' government of Brasil back in 1961 was electrifying. It blew me, still does blow me away!

Our mother Nancy went on to say that she had been approached by one of the srnior officials of the Brazilian government, their State Department, just like ours, a 4-story building she said. The official that she knew and that had worked closely with our father Harry Quinn had approached her once he heard that our father was leaving Brasilia.

Turns out that our father and his work, the kind of no-nonsense, hard-working man that he was was well-respected and that they had enjoyed working with him and wanted to give him and our mother a token of their appreciation. He asked my mother what would her husband / our father like as a parting gift?

I cannot remember everything that our mother said and exactly as she had said it, but I do know the essentials of what she said to me telling me this story recently in front of my brother Eric. At some point she had talked to our father and they had spoken of this and my father said that he would like one of the hanging circular maps that he saw when he entered the building as he had admired it greatly.

So, when she told this official he paused, maybe even gulped and said something like : " But there are only four of them, one on each of the four floors of this building." He said that he would check and see what he could do about this and let them know.

My mother and father did not know what the outcome would be? They had to wait , wonder and see? Anyway, you all already know the outcome, they presented one of these maps to our father and mother and we have enjoyed it, loved it, weathered and aged it with our travels since then around the world that meant it went next back here to Washington D.C., then to Trinidad, then back here, next to Paris, France and then back here and perhaps even to San Leandro, California? I am not sure about that?

I have more questions for our mother but I want to post this now with the pictures that were just taken by our Swedish neighbor Katarina with her phone and sent to my email address : tonythewineguy@gmail.com. I will now include them here for everyone to see.

As I just told Katarina this is pretty special and still what an honor, and on the eve of the World Soccer Cup, and in two years the summer Olympics, wow, this - as it was then - is history, this is a period in time that was then and is now special and I , for one, have not lost sight of that at all.

Enjoy this, please share this with your friends, and let's all make some really big noise for Brasil now as they have earned and deserve it. I loved spending the six years of my life there from 2-8 years-of-age and never tire of hearing of those times from our mother Nancy. Thanks Mom, you are the best. Thanks, too Dad, you are also super : we admire you both.

What a wonderful and colorful and magical and transforming period of our lives we four spent there back in the mid to late fifties and the first years of the 60's.

Ola, obregado para tudos, vais, vais, vais, vais VAIS BRASIL!   Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn Monday, June 9th, 2014

  • Jandir Passos Perfect Tony. Umfortunately most information on brazilian wines is on portuguese. I strongly hint you contact Vinhos Brasileiros por Rogerio Dardeau . Rogerio Dardeau is the best expert on brazilian wines.
  • Anthony Quinn Thank you Jandir, you should let Rogerio know about me but I think that he already does? I think that he is the same Rogerio? I am thrilled that they do exported, and I commend Winebow Imports here in the United States for carrying the LIDIO CARRARO wines that in late June Barbara Ruppel of the Wines Of Brasil told me about when with her and Anna Paula Valenti that also then worked for the Wines Of Brasil. What happened there?!? Where is it now? Confusing to me Jandir. I have a great story to share with you all Jandir that I will type here a bit later about the beginning of Brazilia and a gift to my father then by the government of Brazil to him back in 1962-1963 that I have here on my desk that is are, specila, unique and wonderful and a bit of real Brazilian history! Can you guess what I might have Jandir? Cheers, Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn 6/5/2014 #LidioCarraro #Brazilia #BraziliaIn1962#thestartofBrasil #winesOfBrasil #BarbaraRuppel
